We always say that we will never ver fully understand guys. But, they feel the same way. Cosmo got upcoming leading man, JM De Guzman, to point out female behaviors that leave most men scratching their heads.
You know a gentleman has superstar potential when he can hold his own onscreen against other crushes ng bayan by flashing that enigmatic, boyish grin. Juan Miguel De Guzman has been in show business for over a decade, but the female population discovered him rather belatedly via the blockbuster hit, My Amnesia Girl. His hypnotic eyes, heart-melting smile, and very Pinoy features made a lot of femmes sit up and say “Who’s that hottie?” But anonymity is now a thing of the past. He’s been in Philippine showbiz now for more than a year. But, something’s got to give. Someone has to kick elbows and call the crowd for him.
Whose name is Ian. Yes, Ian Batherson.
It seemed that people were afraid. But they shouldn’t.
He should have been the male lead actor to portray the lover-diver of the lead actress (portrayed by actress Jackie Rice) in GMA-7’s new teleserye: “Sisid”.
But two other actors of his category got the part (Dominic Rocco and JC Tiuseco), and he was demoted to a supporting role.
With this, Ian had to say:
“Yeah, I am not hypocrite to say that I didn’t feel bad about it”, he quipped. “I really felt bad. Coz I know I can portray the role. And I prepared myself to deliver the role. I practiced more of scuba-diving stuff. I can swim good. I improved my physique to show them off. But still, in the end, they gave the part to someone else. I really felt bad.”
Now, his role in the said teleserye and TV soap opera will be a minor part. He will be the lead actor’s bestfriend who lives in Manila. His character’s name there is Dexter, the buddy of the lead actor.
Maybe, a blessing in disguise?
“I do hope so”, Ian answered. “And I will keep on doing my best.”
Before this teleserye, Ian joined Starstruck star search of channel 7, before being among the Survivors in “Survivor Philippines”. But he was the fourth guy who was ousted there, unluckily, and other guys stole the show and the limelight.
That’s why Ian is now deciding to go a little sexier.
“I am willing to bare more and do sexy roles”, he said to this writer. “This year, I want to join Cosmopolitan Bachelors Bash, I can ramp there and take-off my shirt and wear skimpy trunks. I really want to do ramp this time.”
Ian is under GMA Artist Center home talents of GMA channel 7. With Mr. Arsi Baltazar as their mentor and handler there.
Lived most of his life in California, Ian’s mom has Filipina blood. And he’s learning Tagalog, a native Filipino dialect, so much more.
“Give me more time, and I will be fluent!”, Ian said.

Tatlong taon na ang itinatagal ng relasyong Derek Ramsay at Angelica panganiban. pero ang ipinagtataka ng dalawa, lalo na itong si Angelica, hindi na nilubayan ng intriga ang kanilang pagsasama.Mula nang maging mag-on sila nung 2006, lahat na yata ng klase ng intriga, kontrobersya, tsismis at kung anu-anong espekulasyon at akusasyon, ipinukol na sa kanila. Like, sobrang ‘chickboy’ raw itong si Derek na kahit saan magpunta, mapalayo lang kay Angelica ng isang araw, pagiging chickboy kaagad ang inaatupag.
Tulad nung magtungo ito ng Dumaguete para mag-recruit ng player ng Frisbies team na ino-organize niya, may babae raw na sumalubong sa kanya roon at nag-check-in na kasama niya sa hotel. Ngayon, sila naman ni Erich Gonzales na naging kapareha niya sa teleseryeng “Magkaribal” noon at sa indie film na “Corazon” na nai-shooting na nila- sila naman ngayon ang naiintriga. Na kesyo sina Derek at Erich na daw ngayon! Na diumano, without Angelica’s knowledge, may lihim na relasyong namamagitan na raw between Erich and Derek. to the point na ipinakilala na raw ni Derek itong si Erich sa kanyang ina. At hindi lang ‘yun…
May umiikot pang tsismis na itong si Derek ay may sex video at may sakit na cancer. Ano ba ang katotohanan sa mga isyung ito?
Sabi ni Derek: “Actually, the only thing that most affected me is the cancer issue. Not because dahil sa akin, kasi alam ko naman na wala akong cancer. Nu’ng napabalita ‘yan, nabigla ako dahil sa tatlong ‘Derek Ramsay’ sa pamilya namin: ako, yung father ko at at yung fourteen year old na brother ko. kaya nung nakarating sa akin ang ‘canser issue”, tinawagan ko agad ang father ko at tinanong kung may sakit ba siya ng cancer at baka inililihim lang niya sa akin? Nagkataon pa nun na kagagaling lang niya sa ospital at nagpa-check-up. Alam n’yo, nagalit pa siya sa akin. wala raw siyang sakit! At lalong walang cancer! Huwag daw akong magpapapatol sa mga ganung intriga!”
Dagdag pa ni Derek: “Alam ko yung totoo, e. Kung totoong may sex video ako, o kung totoong may cancer ako, o may ibang babae ako- I just threw over my shoulder and move-on!”
Pero kahit anong tibay at tatag, madalas, ang mga artista’y tinatalo pa rin ng mga mapanirang isyu. Lalo na kung malayong-malayo ito sa katotohanan. gayundin si Angelica na bagamat nag-desisyon nang hindi na papatol sa anumang mga isyu ay bumibigay pa rin at lumalaban. pa rin ang katarayan.

Madalas, kapag pikon na pikon na, bumibigay pa rin ito at nakapagsasalita ng: “Mahirap po kasing patumbahin kami ni Derek. Pinatibay na ho kasi kami ng panahon at pinatibay n’yo na kami. Kung patuloy nyo kaming hihilain paibaba, patuloy naman kaming lalaban paitaas.”
Pero mahal lang talaga ni Angelica si Derek. At walang makakagiba sa pagmamahalang iyon! Kaya sa kabila ng desisyong magbabago na ng imahe itong si Angelica, tinatalo pa rin siya ng sobrang pagmamahal niya kay Derek. Lalaban siya, maipagtanggol lang niya ang kanyang relasyon.Kesehodang siya na ang lumabas na masama, ang mataray, ang matapang, ang insecure at mapagbintang. Lahat ng iyon ay babalewalain niya, maipagtanggol lang ang ayon sa kanya ay kinaiinggitang magandang pagmamahalan nila ni Derek.
Naniniwala si Angelica na talagang meron lang taong gustong umatake sa kanila ni Derek. Ang pinakahuli nga ay ang isyung ‘hiwalay’ na sila ni Derek. At ang pinagtataka pa nila ni Derek, yung mga lumang isyu ay muling binubuhay para pag-awayin lang sila. Tulad nitong ‘Dumaguete issue’ at ngayon, yung sa kanila ni Erich Gonzales na nung isang taon pa kapwa sinagot na nina Derek at Angelica ang isyu na yan.
Sabi muli ni Derek: “To tell you the truth, hindi lang kami nagkasama ni Erich sa teleseryeng ‘Magkaribal’, nagkaroon din kami ng indie film, yun ngang ‘Corazon’. At may ilan pa kaming pagsasamahan na mga projects ni Erich inthe future. Hindi na namin dapat pang patulan ito ni Angelica dahil alam naman niya ang totoo ukol rito.”
Kaya lang daw siya nagsasalita ay parang lumalabas na si Erich ang umeeksena at nanggugulo sa relasyon nila ni Angelica.
“Parang lumalabas na si Erich yung pumapasok sa eksena at nanggugulo sa magandang friendship nila ni Angelica. My mom asked me if she could meet Erich in person, sa totoo lang. And Erich naman was so nice to say yes. Angel knows about this. So, ano ang isyu ukol rito? And to think na ito ay nangyari na at nasagot na namin almost one year ago! Angelica and I have been together for almost three years now, And we’re really very, very happy. So, I don’t know why.”
Sagot naman ni Angelica:
“Oh, yes! MAMATAY SILA SA INGGIT! I’m sure na ang gumagawa ng intrigang ‘yan ay naglalaway na naman ngayon! Ano naman kaya ang next na gagawin natin para mapatumba sila? Sorry, no? Payaman na kami ng payaman at painit na kami ng painit dahil sa ginagawa nyong yan!”
Tanong: Kung painit ng painit at patibay ng patibay ang kanilang relasyon, bakit patuloy silang iniintriga ng kanilang mga detractors? Ano ba ang meron sa tambalang Derek-Angelica na wala sa ibang magkarelasyon?

Some of my friends are going completely ballistic.
The MetroManila Development Authority’s campaign to completely eradicate all these nicotine junkies from the city has created havoc. Soon absolutely no one is allowed to smoke in main and secondary streets in the entire Metropolis. We are not talking just Manila here but all the cities covered by the office … going as far as, uh, Bulacan?
So how is that?
You cannot smoke inside restaurants. You cannot smoke inside malls. You cannot smoke in government buildings. You cannot smoke in airports. You cannot smoke in offices and schools. If you are one of those who find ultimate pleasure sucking in smoke down your throat and into your lungs …. you have to step out of wherever you are for your nicotine shot, right? As if that is not hassle enough.
And now you cannot smoke in public places in Manila. (Insert canned laughter here.)
I stopped smoking a little over three years ago.
I started the habit when I was about sixteen years old. I began with a stick of Marlboro Red or two … until that eventually progressed into Marlboro Green, then Pall Mall … then eventually Philip Morris. By the time I hit fifty, I was smoking about a pack and a half to two packs a day. I used to buy cigarettes by the piece. Then I bought them by the pack. Eventually, out of an attempt to save money, I bought them by the carton.
I justified my nicotine addiction to my stressful occupation and pre-occupations. I worked in media. My life was full of deadlines and assholes. I needed to … uhm, relax. Puff … puff.
Plus the fact that it looked good puffing a cigarette while drinking coffee. It looked good blowing smoke while clinging onto a glass of Gin and Vodka tonic at a bar, making goo-goo eyes and doing Vogue poses in order to look attractive. The cigarette dangling from my nicotine stained fingers was a security blanket: the act of sucking in the smoke then blowing it out with pursed lips or through my nose was something to do.
I smoked inside my car. I smoked inside my office. I smoked in my bedroom. I smelled of smoke from the moment I wake up (drink your mug of coffee, read the headline of the Inquirer then see what Conrad de Quiros has to say, while lighting my first of many cigarettes throughout the day)until the final credits of my day started scrolling down my tired mind (one finally fag to end the adventure of the past day). I smelled of smoke … and I did not notice it. And I did not give a damn.
I did not give a damn but my mother did. Shall I tell you of the times she would cut out clippings from newspapers and magazines showing the perils of smoking? Or she would cut out pictures of lungs infested with cancer attributed to smoking … or asking me to spell emphysema in a single breath? I would come home … and dear Mama would have something tacked on my cork board, usually an article about sure-death from a habit that I should not have even started.
Ah, well. But that’s the way of all mothers.
Then there is this worldwide anti-smoking campaign that made any smoker’s life regress from unfair to downright miserable. There was this big deal about second hand smoke (or how your health can be jeopardized because you are in the same room as a nicotine junkie). And soon enough, the smoking section of restaurants, airports including airplanes became extinct. Even taking a relatively short plane ride — say, Manila to Bangkok — was a nerve wrecking experience for a smoker who anticipates claustrophobia mixed with the inability to light a joint.
But perhaps my worst experience was having to go outside for my nicotine break at the height of winter. I had to step outside the balcony of my hotel room in Barcelona, freezing my ass off at nine in the evening just to take a smoke. Worse, I was crammed inside a very small smoking lounge in the airport with about twenty other fellow junkies trying to get my fill.
Ironically, it is not all these that made me kick the habit. It was not a spur of the moment decision either.
To begin with, whether one realizes it or not, smoking is a very expensive diversion to ruin one’s health. At P35.00 to P40.00 per pack of my favorite menthol cigarette, I figured out that I spent approximately P53.00 to P70.00 per day just to keep my mouth occupied and smelling like the sewers. That total to something like P490.00 a week or P1960 a month. I figured out that I will not only be saving close to two grand per month … but more so, sparing myself of medical bills if and when …
Worse was the fact that I was getting bad bouts of colds almost every month as well. Together with that came coughing spells that almost had me cringing on the floor gasping for air. I found myself using my health card all too often, diagnosed as having a variety of upper respiratory infections which include pharyngitis … and eventually developing what my doctor called bronchial asthma. OK, that did it.
One day, while at work filming inside a hospital, I ran out of cigarettes.
It was such a tedious and needless exercise to go all the way to the parking lot of that medical institution just to take a puff of my cigarette. Worse, it was already exasperating to go on panic mode when it slips my mind to replenish my stock of cigarettes. So I decided to quit. Just like that. I told one of my assistants, “I think I will stop smoking.” Yes, just like that. And I did. And I have not smoked a cigarette … or even taken a puff for more than three years.
I feel good about this.
I also realized that it is much harder thinking of how difficult it is to stop smoking than just ending the addiction all together. God knows I tried everything before, including those silly nicotine patches that promised a slow but effective weaning process. But nothing beats good old cold turkey. Yes, there will be that craving … yet all it takes is to condition your mind to think of something else. Maybe gulp a glass of water. Or shove chewing gum on your oral cavity. But I think all that is overrated drama.
It is not a matter of having a steel will or a determination to swim the English Channel. Quitting a habit … is making a decision to do it … and just doing it. Like losing weight. Or dumping a stupid lover. Or reinventing your existence.
But indeed, there are repercussions. You gain weight not because you have re-channeled your oral fixation. You start eating with such gusto because, as my doctor described so vividly, the nicotine coating on your tongue wears off and suddenly your taste buds are fully operational again. You add pounds because food never tasted so good again.
Perhaps the worst adverse reaction is that after a while you cannot stand the smell of cigarette smoke. You are disgusted with the smell of the breath of smokers … or the way smoke clings onto the upholstery, the curtains and clothes (whether yours or somebody else’s). You get irritated by the argument whether you should stay inside a restaurant or choosing to dine al fresco because your companion happens to be a smoker. And if you choose to dine indoors, you get so irritated when your dinner mate excuses himself like five times in a span of one hour to take a step outside and puff a cigarette.
When you begin to feel so much better … and you regain a voice that can match that of Enrico Caruso the next time you go to a Videoke showdown, you ask yourself whatever made you stick to that habit for years on end … and why it took so long for you to realize that you are doing the best thing for yourself by raising the chances for a longer life.
Maybe worse than worst is that you start telling all your smoker friends to quit, giving an inspiring example of your life and transformation. And boring them to death in the process. I realize that I have become my mother.
Yes, some of my friends are going crazy cursing the MMDA for their new law to put smokers into the category of extinction. But honestly — I am glad. No, I am happy. To quit smoking is an individual decision. But it helps that the government is helping others help themselves in taking that all too overrated leap to realize that life can be made a little bit better with just a little less smoke.

TONI GONZAGA AND longtime boyfriend Direk Paul Soriano have been together for four years kaya marami ang curious if they already have marriage plans. Tumitindi pa ang isyu dahil sa mga forecast na may matatanggap daw ngayong taon si Toni na wedding proposal.

Kung tutuusin, wala namang problema dahil boto ang kanilang pamilya sa kanilang relasyon. Toni’s father, Mr. Carlito Gonzaga, prays na magkatuluyan silang dalawa.
Ilang tulog na lang ay June na, ang buwan ng kasalan. Hindi pa ba wish ni Toni na sana ay maglakad na rin siya patungong altar as a June bride? Muling inulit ni Toni ang kanyang sinabi noon sa isang interview that they still have to wait for three years before getting married. Alam daw ni Direk Paul na ang ideal age of marriage niya is 30 years old. “27 pa lang ako so, maghihintay pa ako ng three years para ma-enjoy ko naman iyong mga opportunities na dumarating ngayon,” paliwanag ni Toni.
Kamakailan ay nagsalita rin si Direk Paul tungkol sa isyu when he was interviewed by The Buzz on the set of Star Magic’s Station ID shoot na siya ang direktor. “She wants three years then three years I’ll wait. I pray every night that she’s the one I’ll spend my life with. I think we’ve invested four years of our lives together – through the tough times and the good times and we’re still here together happy as ever. I definitely pray three years later it’s us. If she says three years then I’ll wait. Siya ang boss, eh.”

Bilib ako sa tibay ng relasyon ng dalawa. They are an amazing match. Direk Paul loves Toni so much that he’s willing to wait for her kahit abutin pa ng tatlong taon ang kanyang paghihintay. Pero sabi nga ng isang kasabihan, kung may tiyaga may nilaga. Ang mahalaga ay mahal nila ang isa’t isa at masaya sila kapag magkasama.
Sinasabing gusto raw nila sa Taytay ganapin ang kanilang kasal. “Taytay is like a second home to me. If she wants to get married in Taytay, we’ll get married in Taytay. I’ll leave the wedding to her. Just tell me what time, where and I’ll show up. For me talaga the wedding is about her. I’ll just be there,” Direk Paul said.
Sinagot din ni Direk Paul kung totoo ang balita na nagpapatayo na siya ng bahay para kay Toni. “Am I building a house for her? No, not yet. That’s definitely something in my future plans.”
